  • June 5: Indian Arrival Day in Suriname

June 5 is observed as Indian Arrival Day in Suriname- a country in South America where 27 % population is of people of Indian origin.
In 1873, on June 5, a ship known as Lala Rookh arrived at Paramaribo, which is today the Capital of Suriname. It had carried 452 Indian laborers from Kolkata (Calcutta). They were brought by the British on this Dutch territory as indentured labors.
Rest is history as they say!
